If you’ve already gone through a 12-step program, or if you are interested in learning about other options, you might be looking at alternatives. It’s always a good idea to find out more about your options, even if you think that you’re going to be pursuing a 12 step program. So, what are some alternatives to a 12 Step Program in Florida?
Moderation Management
Some 12-step alternatives emphasize moderation rather than complete abstinence. Consider issues such as food addiction: it’s impossible to get away from food completely, so abstinence isn’t always possible. Abstinence can be a major issue for some people, as it makes them feel as though they “failed” if they try a substance just once again. Moderation teaches people to use substances intelligently.
At the same time, moderation doesn’t work for some people. It’s not the right alternative to those who absolutely cannot moderate their substance use, but it can be worth a try for those who want to manage their lifestyle in a different way. And it’s not a requirement for Moderation Management. People can decide whether they want to commit to moderation or abstinence. About 30% of those using Moderation Management choose complete abstinence, it’s simply that the option is there.
SMART Recovery
An international organization, this is a science-based, evidence-based approach to substance abuse. SMART Recovery uses aspects of cognitive behavioral therapy and other motivational strategies to help and empower people. SMART itself stands for Self-Management and Recovery Training, and it has a focus on personal growth and responsibility. It also involves both individuals and their families, much like a family addiction therapy program at a Florida rehab center. There are local meetings in many areas.
Rather than 12 or even 13 steps, there are instead 4 steps: obtaining and managing motivation, learning to manage urges, handling emotions, thoughts, and behaviors, and finding and striking a balance in life. This simplified system can help people remain focused. SMART Recovery includes a 24/7 chatroom, online message boards, and daily online meetings, all of which can be used by those who are busy.
Women for Sobriety
Specifically targeted towards women, Women for Sobriety is an empowering program meant to help women on their recovery journey. Women have 13 statements that they are thought to think about and accept every day. This is an example of mindfulness. Mindfulness can help people commit to their recovery every day. Women for Sobriety generally meets in small groups, led by someone who understands recovery on a personal level, and women are encouraged to talk about themselves in positive terms.
Secular Organizations for Sobriety
Some people are not comfortable with the traditional 12 Step Program because it requires submitting themselves to a higher power. Some 12-step alternatives are very similar to the traditional 12 Step Program but are secular instead. Secular Organizations for Sobriety is one of these. It’s a non-profit organization that offers support for those who experience issues with addiction.
This organization has been acting to help those with addiction for 30 years and there are chapters throughout the world. S.O.S. meetings include celebrations and positivity, which are targeted towards making people feel more comfortable and positive about their journey. The focus is primarily on drug and alcohol addiction, and abstinence rather than moderation is supported.
LifeRing Secular Recovery
Another secular organization, LifeRing focuses on the separation between a person and their addiction. It is based on the premise that there are two people: the sober individual and the addict within. Individuals are encouraged to work on their own internal strengths, building up their self-control, and working together to support each other.
LifeRing is unique in that there’s a special service called “ePals” that lets you connect with people online. That means that face-to-face meetings aren’t necessarily required, which is something important in an increasingly digital world. Otherwise, there are one-on-one and face-to-face meetings available. These meeting services are free.
